November 22, 2011
Gov. Deval Patrick signs what is known as the Expanded Gambling Act. It authorizes the establishment of up to three gambling casinos and one slot machine parlor in the state, with one of the casinos is to be built in or near Boston. The law results in the licensing and opening of resort casinos in Springfield (the MGM Springfield) in 2018, Everett (the Encore Boston Harbor) in 2019,* and a slot-machine parlor in Plainville (Plainridge Park Casino) in 2015.
